{"id":2464366,"date":"2023-05-05T18:45:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T22:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/?p=2464366"},"modified":"2023-05-05T18:45:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T22:45:27","slug":"real-interest-rates-by-country-visualized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/real-interest-rates-by-country-visualized\/","title":{"rendered":"Real Interest Rates By Country Visualized"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Interest rates play a crucial role in the economy because they affect consumers, businesses, and investors alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can have significant implications for people\u2019s ability to access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/late-payment-removal\/\">credit<\/a>, manage debts, and buy more expensive goods such as cars and houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This graphic uses data from <a href=\"https:\/\/infinityasset.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/rankingdejurosreais210323.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Infinity Asset Management<\/a> to visualize the real interest rates (ex ante) of 40 major world economies, by subtracting projected inflation over the next 12 months from current nominal rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ex ante <\/strong>is Latin for \u201cbefore the event\u201d, and in this case refers to the fact that this data uses <em>projected inflation rates<\/em> to calculate real interest rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nominal Interest Rates vs. Real Interest Rates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominal interest rates refer to the rate at which money can be borrowed or lent at face value, without considering any other factors like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/how-is-inflation-measured-understanding-the-consumer-price-index\/\">inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>real interest rate<\/strong> is the nominal interest rate after taking into account inflation, reflecting the true cost of borrowing or lending. Real interest rates can fluctuate over time and are influenced by various factors such as inflation, central bank policies, and economic growth. They can also influence economic growth by affecting investment and consumption decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ca-widget\" data-token=\"i95ddd011e3f\"><\/div><script async defer src=\"https:\/\/secure.money.com\/embeds\/embedder.js?v=1\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the International Monetary Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Blogs\/Articles\/2023\/04\/10\/interest-rates-likely-to-return-towards-pre-pandemic-levels-when-inflation-is-tamed\" target=\"_blank\">IMF<\/a>), since the mid-1980s, as seen in Argentina, can lead to anomalies in both real and nominal rates, causing problems for the country\u2019s broader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/heres-why-you-should-buy-more-stock-when-the-economy-is-collapsing\/\">economy<\/a> and financial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see above, with a 78% nominal interest rate, Argentina\u2019s real interest rates remain the lowest on the planet due to a staggering annual inflation rate of over 100%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interest Rate Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.visualcapitalist.com\/mapped-countries-with-highest-inflation-rate\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> and tighter monetary policy have resulted in rapid increases in nominal interest rates recently in many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, IMF analysis suggests that recent increases could be temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Central banks in advanced economies are likely to ease monetary policy and bring interest rates back to pre-pandemic levels when inflation is brought under control, according
