CalPERS and CalSTRS collectively represent $750.5 billion in assets, and together hold over $44 billion in fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not <em>if<\/em> CalPERS and CalSTRS divest from fossil fuels \u2013 it\u2019s <em>when and how fast<\/em>. With Californians experiencing climate whiplash from deadly floods to intensifying fires, the brunt of this climate chaos is falling on those who have done the least to cause the crisis,\u201d said Miriam Eide, Fossil Free California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">California Passes SB 252<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Massive gratitude to the students, teachers, union members, pensioners, and legislators for moving SB 252 through the Senate, and protecting our communities, pensions, and climate. California Assembly here we come!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California, the world\u2019s fourth largest economy, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/05\/25\/california-could-mandate-emissions-disclosure-even-if-sec-doesnt\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">poised to lead the financial sector<\/a> into a new era of financial prudence and risk-managed growth by removing toxic and volatile fossil fuel holdings from CalPERS and CalSTRS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SB 252 is widely supported, with over 140 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/did-not-get-the-california-stimulus-payment-yet\/\">California<\/a> organizations endorsing, including unions representing over 470,000 members, and 4 Senate co-sponsors, with California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culvercityobserver.com\/story\/2023\/03\/16\/news\/state-treasurer-fiona-ma-issues-statement-on-vote-to-support-divestment-legislation-at-calpers-board-meeting\/12312.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">State Treasurer Fiona Ma underscoring<\/a> the bill allowing pensions <em>\u201cnecessary time to prudently plan.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A unique coalition of students, retirees, teachers, union members and people from all over California have voiced their support, sending in over 1,300 letters to their senators, and for hearings, over 200 people joined in person or phoned in, while over 120 traveled to Sacramento to meet with legislators, as part of a Climate Accountability Lobby Day, in tandem support for SB 253 and SB 261.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Californians are facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/energy-and-environment\/23550073\/california-floods-rainfall-weather-climate-change-whiplash\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">climate whiplash<\/a>, attempting to navigate lives, jobs, and families, mopping up from record-breaking flooding (estimated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconvalley.com\/2023\/01\/12\/california-storm-losses-estimated-at-more-than-30-billion\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$30 billion in damages <\/a>in 2023 so far) following decades of drought, and girding for the <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/explore\/ask-nasa-climate\/3066\/the-climate-connections-of-a-record-fire-year-in-the-us-west\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ever-lengthening wildfire season<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor California\u2019s teachers, workers, and retirees, climate chaos isn\u2019t a someday problem, it\u2019s a right-now crisis,\u201d added <strong>Miguel Alatorre.<\/strong> \u201cCalifornians are ready to move swiftly on SB 252, and lead the nation on fiduciary responsibility, pension stability and growth. Together we are building a fossil free world for students, workers, retirees, and communities where all of us can thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/report.ipcc.ch\/ar6syr\/pdf\/IPCC_AR6_SYR_SPM.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">IPCC urgently warns<\/a> that <em>\u201cthere is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all,\u201d<\/em> with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres exclaiming <em>\u201cnew funding for fossil fuel exploration and production infrastructure is delusional.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With SB 252, California, the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy is poised to lead the financial sector into a new era of financial prudence and risk-managed growth by divesting the funds of their toxic fossil fuel holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSB 252 passing the Senate today is monumental. It&#8217;s proof that it is possible for reform to occur despite the manipulations of the fossil fuel industry, despite those who push for the opposite and prioritize profits over lives,\u201d said Anaya Sayal, 16, Youth vs. Apocalypse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt brings us one step closer to living in a world where we don&#8217;t have to live in a constant state of apprehension regarding health conditions, and issues we face because of climate chaos; that future generations will also face as a result of the climate catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like to thank bill author Senator Lena Gonzalez, the bill\u2019s co-authors for supporting this bill, and for all of the youth and adults who worked tirelessly with them to get the bill to the point it is at today. Your hard work does not go unnoticed!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as politically-motivated extremists work at the federal and state levels in attempts to ban common sense responsible and sustainable financial risk assessments, <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/investing\/news\/articles\/2023-01-12\/anti-esg-drive-in-u-s-could-have-cost-taxpayers-up-to-708-million-study\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">costing taxpayers millions<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple studies reveal divestment leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/fossilfreeca.org\/financial-outcomes-divesting\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">neutral or positive returns<\/a>, removing volatile and risky assets from CalPERS and CalSTRS\u2019s portfolios. If CalPERS and CalSTRS divested in 2009, the funds would have gained $17.4 billion by 2019, or <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/u\/0\/folders\/1gAI5HHUMjgWyVn5ClIxT6p2k9MTRL8U2\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$6,072 more per CalPERS member<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/u\/0\/folders\/18PzJ1fig5tww4S1uYetqJ8Jd4heA4uYZ\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$5,752 more per CalSTRS member<\/a>. A June 2023 report from University of Waterloo is set to reveal updated data reflecting how much richer CalPERS and CalSTRS would have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven today fossil fuel companies are greenwashing rather than truly addressing climate change. And CalPERS unwittingly becomes party to that greenwashing, as when for example, it promoted to members Exxon\u2019s bogus net zero by 2050 claims,\u201d said Carlos Davidson, Faculty, San Francisco State University, CalSTRS member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Professor James Stone wrote, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/article273691870.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Fossil fuels are a losing bet.
