This historic achievement is long overdue because Big Pharma has stopped it from happening for decades while they continued to make record profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/accountable.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2023-06-28-Pharma-CPI-Report-FINAL.docx.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">recent analysis<\/a> from government watchdog Accountable.US found some of the major pharmaceutical companies that produce the affected, notoriously expensive drugs \u2013 including Merck, Eli Lilly, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/top-20-global-biopharmaceutical-companies-report-2-3-market-cap-growth-in-q2-2023\/\">Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/a>\u2019s Janssen \u2013 reported combined earnings of $38.7 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, these companies\u2019 combined stock buybacks and dividends increased by $1.9 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ca-widget\" data-token=\"k8f5c9ac62a4\"><\/div><script async defer src=\"https:\/\/secure.money.com\/embeds\/embedder.js?v=1\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repealing The Inflation Reduction Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cBig drug companies raked in billions in profits while standing in the way of lower prescription drug costs for millions of seniors. The time of Big Pharma grossly overcharging American seniors on life-saving medicines is coming to an end,\u201d said Tony Carrk, Executive Director&nbsp; for Accountable.US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis historic achievement is still under threat, however, because the MAGA House Majority is hellbent on repealing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/a-year-later-industry-still-lobbying-against-inflation-reduction-acts-success-for-average-americans\/\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>. They would rather pad the profits of their major industry donors than help seniors who are literally choosing between food and medicines.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big Drug Companies and Their Allies in Congress Will Say or Do Anything to Keep Drug Prices Unaffordable: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2023\/08\/29\/hhs-selects-the-first-drugs-for-medicare-drug-price-negotiation.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announcement<\/a> today from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services comes on the heels of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4060609-phrma-sues-biden-administration-over-medicare-drug-price-negotiations\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">lawsuit <\/a>filed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) seeking to block the Inflation Reduction Act\u2019s measures allowing Medicare to use its bulk purchasing power to negotiate lower prices for beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Big Pharma spent <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/biden-administration-targets-drugs-from-jj-merck-for-controversial-medicare-price-negotiations-114618490.html#:~:text=%22Despite%20Big%20Pharma%20spending%20nearly,House%20official%20said%20on%20background.\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$400 million<\/a> lobbying last year alone, an Accountable.US review found PhRMA <a href=\"https:\/\/accountable.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/2022-08-10-IRA-Opponent-Master-Document-FINAL.docx.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">spent nearly $70 million<\/a> lobbying against efforts to allow Medicare to negotiate the prices of prescription drugs and other measures to lower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/shareholders-request-equitable-access-to-medicines\/\">drug prices<\/a> in the years leading up to the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. Industry wide, manufacturers reportedly upped prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/drugmakers-raise-prices-least-350-drugs-us-january-2022-12-30\/\" target=\"_blank\">on at least 350 drugs<\/a> in the U.S. in January.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, UK drug manufacturing giant AstraZeneca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/astrazeneca-files-litigation-challenge-inflation-reduction-act-2023-08-25\/\" target=\"_blank\">filed the eighth lawsuit<\/a> filed against the Biden effort to save seniors billions of dollars on life-improving-and-saving medicines.
