It&#8217;s Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk&#8217;s latest attempt to disrupt the world as we know it, and it might actually be as quirky and unpredictable as Musk himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tesla chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/elon-musks-most-talked-about-moments-revealed\/\">owns X<\/a>, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Musk has big dreams for X, as he plans to transform it into a <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musk-vows-x-super-235132283.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">super-app<\/a> next year. If all goes according to plan, X will be a go-to spot for dating, personal finance, shopping and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, X has been a flop so far from a financial standpoint under Musk&#8217;s leadership. He <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/elon-musk-twitter-x-worth-half-since-44b-acquisition\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">shelled out<\/a> $44 billion for the social-media app, and now it&#8217;s worth just $19 billion. Could an artificial intelligence (AI) infusion turn X into the tech juggernaut that Musk envisions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grok: The Beginning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk is many things. He&#8217;s unpredictable, sometimes charming and possibly a genius. However, above all else, Musk is hyper-competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to toot my own horn, but as soon as Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) invested tens of billions of dollars into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/ai-race-accelerates-with-amazons-investment-in-anthropic\/\">OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT<\/a> AI chatbot technology, I knew it wouldn&#8217;t be long before Musk would roll out a competing business venture. In fact, this prediction came to pass in July:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Announcing formation of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xai?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">@xAI<\/a> to understand reality<\/p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1679164661869182976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">July 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I construed &#8220;to understand reality&#8221; as &#8220;to crush all competitors in this generative AI thing that everybody&#8217;s talking about now,&#8221; but that&#8217;s just my own translation. A more cynical commentator might assume that xAI isn&#8217;t much different from Musk&#8217;s other self-indulgent non-Tesla ventures, such as SpaceX and the ridiculously named Boring Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, here is Musk&#8217;s &#8212; er, I mean xAI&#8217;s &#8212; explanation of what Grok is supposed to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Announcing Grok!<br><br>Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!<br><br>Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don\u2019t use\u2026<\/p>&mdash; xAI (@xai) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xai\/status\/1721027348970238035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">November 5, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot to unpack here. First of all, does the world really need a chatbot that &#8220;has real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform&#8221;? This seems to suggest that if people spread misinformation on X (imagine that!), this will inform Grok&#8217;s view of the world and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Grok is supposedly &#8220;designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak.&#8221; Is it just me, or does it sound like Grok is being programmed as a chatbot version of Musk himself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Grok only has &#8220;two months of training&#8221; under its digital belt, so don&#8217;t be surprised if it ends up like Bard, Google parent Alphabet&#8217;s (NASDAQ:GOOGL, NASDAQ:GOOG) attempt at an answer to ChatGPT. As you may recall, Bard&#8217;s rollout was a botched embarrassment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2fe6163b-b4c3-413e-b595-8110e328b42d\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">involving<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/google-ai-chatbot-bard-offers-134700345.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">misinformation<\/a> and lackluster user participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Would you pay for Grok?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast-forward to Nov. 3, and Musk got a &#8220;select group&#8221; ready for xAI&#8217;s release of the long-awaited Grok:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tomorrow, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xai?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">@xAI<\/a> will release its first AI to a select group. <br><br>In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.<\/p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1720372289378590892?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">November 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk is no stranger to braggadocio, so there&#8217;s really nothing surprising here. On the other hand, maybe Grok does have a distinct advantage over ChatGPT, which is humor. ChatGPT and other generative-AI applications may be powerful, but regulators wonder whether they&#8217;re being deployed responsibly. In Musk&#8217;s offbeat way, he seems to be signaling a more mindful deployment of gen-AI technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m hoping.
